Basic knowledge
of Cannabis-based Medicines

Cannabis contains so-called cannabinoids, the main plant-based active ingredients. To date, over 100 different cannabinoids have been identified, with the two best-known (and most important) active ingredients being THC and CBD due to their natural concentration.

THC is the abbreviation for Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol and is the most common active ingredient found in cannabis. It is responsible for a large number of pharmacological effects and has a psychoactive effect.
CBD stands for cannabidiol and is the second most common compound. It has no psychoactive effects itself in contrast to THC, but it could help to reduce its psychoactive effects.

It has been known since the late 1980s that the human body also has an endocannabinoid system that can influence a large number of physiological processes. Since its discovery, cannabinoid researchers have identified endocannabinoid receptors in the central nervous system, the internal organs, connective tissues, glands and immune cells.

There are a variety of strains of Cannabis. “Indica” and “Sativa” are probably the best-known varieties, with Indica being said to have a calming effect and Sativa to be more stimulating or activating.
